A FORMER football club chief has been ordered to pay compensation to his former partner, after he admitted assaulting her following a Christmas row.

Magistrates instructed Gerard O’Connor, a high-flying businessman and former vice-chairman of Durham City FC, to pay £300 compensation to Janice Stokes, along with £200 court costs.

O’Connor, 51, of Ash Meadows, Picktree, Wearside, was also made subject to a restraining order in regard to Ms Stokes.

John Grierson, for O’Connor, said his client wanted the order to last “forever”.

The row broke out three days before last Christmas, taking place at Sainsbury’s and the couple’s home, Consett Magistrates’ Court heard today (Friday, May 17).

David Bryson, prosecuting, said Ms Stokes recalls O’Connor throwing a glass of coke over her face.

He then grabbed her dress and pulled her around, tearing the garment.

The argument escalated, with O’Connor verbally abusing his partner, the court was told.

When Ms Stokes tried to leave, O’Connor told her: “You’re not going anywhere.”

Afraid, Ms Stokes tried to kick him, but he grabbed her and she hit the ground, Mr Bryson said.

Ms Stokes then left the house and later made a complaint to the police.

She suffered bruising to her arms, wrists, elbow and upper thigh.

O’Connor, who had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to assault.

Mr Grierson said the incident happened amid the “pressure of Christmas”.

Carol Cliff, chair of the magistrates, said the restraining order would apply until further orders were made.
