A SEVENTH annual community bike ride was launched today (Wednesday, March 13).

The Durham Big Ride will return on Sunday, September 1, with hundreds of cyclists expected to take part in three, ten and 25-mile rides starting and ending at County Hall, Durham.

The 50-mile Beast ride will follow a week later.

The event raises thousands of pounds each year for various charities.

This year’s was launched in Durham Market Place today.

Colin Wilkes, one of the organisers, said: “We are always looking at the continued growth of cycling as a great way to get fit and enjoy the Durham countryside.

“We have seen numbers grow year on year and this year, we hope, will be the same.

“We’re always working hard to make each year better than the last.

“We are very much part of Durham and the rides, although attracting people from across the North, are very much a family event for the local people.”

The event is being supported by Workwear Express and Whitfield Building Services.
