A COMMUNITY lunch club for older people has been launched in a village pub.

Two course home-cooked meals for people over 50 will be served at the Three Horse Shoes in Maiden Law, near Lanchester, on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

They are being organised by Age UK County Durham and are aimed at people who live alone, or need a break from caring to enjoy a freshly cooked meal.

Melanie Bell, landlady of The Three Horse Shoes said, “Together with Age UK County Durham’s Come Eat Together Team we have worked with older people in the area to set up a lunch where people can enjoy good food in good company.”

Anyone over 50 living in the Durham area is invited along to enjoy a two course meal with tea and coffee, followed by an activity for £7.

Kirsty King-Lough, the charity’s development worker, said: “It’s a chance to catch up with new and old friends over a delicious meal, with the added bonus of no washing up.”

The next lunch will be held on Wednesday, January 31, at 12.30pm.

Diners can choose from mince and dumplings, or liver and onions, both served with potatoes and vegetables.

For dessert, the choice either is apple crumble and custard or trifle.
