ROAD resurfacing work will be carried out over the next few weeks.

Durham County Council is to resurface sections of Front Street and Knitsley Lane in Consett, which will be closed while work is carried out.

The scheme starts on Sunday and is expected to last five days, running until Friday May 12.

The work will require a road closure on Knitsley Lane from just south of its junction with Palmerston Street to its junction with Front Street.

Front Street will be closed from just west of its junction with Knitsley Lane to just east of its junction with Victoria Road.

Brian Buckley, the council’s strategic highways manager, said: “We appreciate there will be some disruption to motorists but we have planned the projects to ensure this is kept to a minimum.

“I’d like to thank motorists in advance for their patience and understanding while these works are carried out.”

Signposted diversions will be in place and there will be temporary traffic lights at the junction of Knitsley Lane and Front Street, covering access to and from Albert Street.

Working hours will be from 7am on Sunday to 6am on Monday; 7pm to 6am Monday to Wednesday and 7pm on Thursday to 6am on Friday (Knitsley Lane only).

Access will be restricted at certain times.
