A TABLE tennis team met a comedy legend when they were crowned champions after winning a national competition.

The lads from Lanchester met Sir Ken Dodd after their triumph in Liverpool as part of the Boys’ Brigade tournament.

The group, based at Lanchester Methodist Church, was made up of Sam Humes, Matthew Grimes and his brother, Sam Grimes.

The contest was held at The Ian Robertson Sports Centre in Liverpool and the teams were playing in front of Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Roz Gladden, Councillor Roy Gladden and Honorary President of Liverpool Battalion, The Earl of Derby.

Natalie Whipday, the Boy’s Brigade’ director for England and Wales, said: “A big well done to all the finalists for such fantastic performances and many congratulations to all the players, but especially to the team from Lanchester.”

Sir Ken Dodd, former member of the 66th Liverpool Boys’ Brigade, Knotty Ash, also attended the finals

He said: “Sport is great training for the mind and it’s very important.”
