THE mother of a nine-year-old boy who was born with a serious heart condition is urging people to take part in this year’s Great North Run.

Sam Lloyd, from Consett, in County Durham, is backing a drive to raise vital funds for the national charity, Caudwell Children.

It paid for her family, including her son, Ethan, to experience a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Disney World, in Florida in December.

Ms Lloyd, 35, said: “It was a magical experience and now we want runners to raise funds for the charity in order to give other children the same opportunity.

“The charity needs more money if they are to secure the future of the Destination Dreams holiday.

“Through sponsorship, participants in the Great North Run could generate a significant amount of money for the charity, which would allow more children to get on the plane to Florida in the future.”

The world’s biggest half marathon, a 13.1 mile course from Newcastle to South Shields, will take place on Sunday, September 10 this year.

The official ballot is open until Monday February, 6, but Caudwell Children also has charity places available for £30 with a fundraising target of £300.
