CHILDREN in the North-East are performing a global take on the traditional nativity story.

Pupils from Delves Lane Primary School, near Consett in County Durham, are putting on a show called Children of the World.

It features the story of Baby Jesus and how Christmas is celebrated in Poland, Malawi, China, Australia, Ireland and the USA.

Teacher Lynsey Haddow said: “It is looking at Christmas traditions of children across the world in different countries. They share songs and stories from their countries then present gifts from their chosen country to Baby Jesus.

“It is not the traditional nativity, but the songs and the stories cover that aspect.

“It is more about covering the different traditions from around the world.

“Each class says ‘Merry Christmas’ in the appropriate language from the country they are covering.”

Years three, four, five and six are performing for parents twice on Wednesday and once on Thursday morning.

Miss Haddow said: “The children are very excited, as they are in primary schools across the country at this time of year.

“They have been learning the songs for about a month and learning the scenes for a good few weeks. They have put a lot of work into it.

“They have loved doing it. They have really enjoyed it and enjoyed learning about different cultures.”
