A REUNION of former steelworkers is to be held next month to mark the anniversary of their plant’s closure.

Consett steelworks closed in September 1980 with the loss of almost 4,000 jobs.

Former workers from the British Steel plant’s garage will hold a reunion on Friday, September 11 to mark the 35th anniversary of the closure.

The get-together is being organised by former garage mechanic Billy Robson, now chief executive of Consett YMCA, who worked at the plant from 1972 until its closure.

Although primarily aimed at ex-garage and transport staff, workers from any department at “The Company” would be welcome.

The reunion takes place in the YMCA bar at 7pm and includes a buffet and exhibition of photographs from the steelworks.

For further information, please ring Mr Robson at the YMCA on 01207 502680.
