AN amateur drama group is busy with final rehearsals for a colourful production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Following its sell-out success with The Full Monty, the CBS Music and Stage Society is performing the country and western musical at the Empire Theatre, in Consett, from Monday June 8 to Saturday June 13.

The play tells a true story about Miss Mona and her girls who operate a house of ill repute known locally as The Chicken Ranch.

They live in peace with the townsfolk, many who are regular visitors, under the protection of the sheriff until an evangelistic television reporter blows the gaff and supporters of the bordello are forced to take sides.

CBS chairman Alan Graham said: “We could only follow The Full Monty with a show that had an equally funny script and bigger than life characters, and believe me the ladies have taken the show and their roles to their hearts.

“You will certainly have a great night of entertainment.”

Director Virginia Aken added “This is a true story which we have tried to acknowledge the historic context however we have added some flair and imagination.

“The cast have worked hard to present this production to you, especially the ladies who were encouraged to find their inner stripper.

"I have had the pleasure of working with a brave and wonderful cast; some of who are new to the group and my thanks goes to all of them all for their commitment and dedication to the show.”

The CBS, originally the Consett, Blackhill and Shotley Bridge Players, is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.

Founded in 1945, the CBS players staged Mikado in 1946 at The Empire Theatre in Consett.
