STRING is in the air in a North-East village after a group of ‘yarn bombers’ struck.

Residents Lanchester awoke to find the village green covered in knitted daffodils.

More than 1,000 were arranged in the centre of the village early this morning. (Easter Sunday)

Organiser Sonia Filmer said: “We have over a thousand daffodils already which is amazing from a village of just over 2,000 homes.

“We put most around the village at 6am Easter Sunday but have also given lots to local residential homes and the hospice and some housebound people.”

The daffodils were made members of Churches Together in Lanchester.

Each has a tag on it saying: “Easter brings new life, new hope” and an encouragement said "take this daffodil home with you.”

The idea sprang from the "yarn bomb" of knitted angels in Tynemouth at Christmas.

Ms Filmer said: “We were looking for a way of expressing to the village the joy we feel on Easter morning.

“Daffodils are my favourite flowers as they bring their boldness and cheer year on year in spring, regardless of how bleak or harsh a winter we have experienced.

“By giving someone a handmade daffodil, we hope it will provide some happiness, whatever situation they find themselves in.

“There is so much enthusiasm and talent in the churches in our wonderful village that I knew people would support the yarn bomb idea.”
