DRUGS with an estimated street value of £10,000 were recovered during an early morning raid in the Consett area this morning (Friday, November 7).

About £6,000 in cash was seized from a house in Delves Lane and white powder, believed to be cocaine, was found at a nearby allotment.

Two 29-year-old men have been arrested on suspicion of possession of class A drugs with intent to supply.

They were taken into custody at Durham city police office to be interviewed.

The raid formed part of Operation Boomerang, which was launched today, and is targeting and disrupting the activities of organised criminal gangs working within the Consett area.

The idea is to remind criminals, and the public, that the force is committed to tackling the issues and problems crime gangs cause for local communities.

The raid was at a private address and local police, supported by the dog section, method of entry officers and CID carried out a breakfast-time raid.

This came on the back of tip-offs that the property was being used to store and distribute class A drugs.

Inspector Keith Wardle said: “We have seen in recent years the demoralising effect that these groups have on local communities and Durham Constabulary has given an assurance to the public that we will continue to target individuals who are involved in this activity."

Members of the public are encouraged to report any criminal activity to the police, either directly on 101 or to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800- 555-111.
