A LOVING couple who met at night school have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

In 1951, John Byrne was studying technical drawing while his future wife, Marjorie, was taking classes in shorthand typing.

They started going out after walking to the bus stop together and wed on June 8, 1957, at St Andrew’s Church in Stanley before going on honeymoon to Kent.

Mr and Mrs Byrne, who are 82 and 80, and from Pelton, near Chester-le-Street, have two sons and four grandchildren.

Mr Byrne, a retired company director, said: “We have had a lot of good luck and good fortune over the years and a very strong friendship.

“We have been very close and have a strong bond which goes on and on and on.”

Yesterday, the couple enjoyed a celebratory tea at Lumley Castle and they are looking forward to a family party at Chester-le-Street Golf Club on Saturday.

Mrs Bryne, who worked as a typist, said: “I cannot believe it is 60 years.

“It has been very active and we have got two fabulous boys.

“I have been very happy.”
