PEOPLE who struggle to get to work or college from rural locations are being urged to take advantage of a scooter loan project.

The Wheels to Work loan scheme aims to provide affordable transport to people unable to access public or private transport for employment or education.

The project has been funded by Chester-le-Street, Stanley and Mid Durham Area Action Partnerships (AAP’s) and Durham County Council, in response to a growing need to help local people get to work or college.

The project officer Gina Davies said: “We’ve been operational for around four months now and have nine people on bikes.

“We still have plenty of brand new scooters though, waiting to get people to work.

“Limited access to transport can be a real barrier in rural locations.”
