A GROUP that raised thousands of pounds to create a new war memorial for a market town has donated its surplus funds to a national site of remembrance.

The Chester-le-Street and District War Memorial Group is dissolving as a charity after have after building a red carved tribute in the town’s market place.

The group agreed the cash it had left over should go to to the Derbyshire-based National Arboretum Memorial and a cheque of £3,150 was yesterday presented to its head of funding Kate Woolley.

Group chairman Jim Carroll, who designed the images on the memorial, said “The Chester-le-Street and District War Memorial Group have now fulfilled their legal responsibility with regard to the war memorial and it is only fitting that monies that have been provided go to other worthwhile causes in support of remembering.

“We have allocated sums of money locally, but the National Arboretum Memorial is a national site of remembering for the whole Country, and we feel proud to support this resource.”

The Chester-le-Street & District Area Action Partnership have supported the Chester-le-Street & District War Memorial Group throughout the development and implementation of the War Memorial Project.
