A TEAM of lorry drivers from the North-East have bared all to make a cheeky calendar for charity.

Staff from Beamish Transport in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, stripped off in aid of If U Care Share and St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham.

Darrin Pickering, managing director of Beamish Transport, said he hoped the Calendar Girls-inspired stunt would raise around £6,000 for the two charities.

He said 1,000 were produced and half had been sold already, but people had also been making donations.

Mr Pickering said: “We always try to help the local community where we can to put a bit a back in.

“It is just a bit of fun because we just wanted to give these organisations a little bit publicity.

“We did not know how many to order but we will be selling them in the New Year. If anyone wants to buy one they can get in touch.”

St Cuthbert’s Hospice offers palliative care for people with terminal illnesses and the If U Care Share Foundation, founded in 2009 by Shirley Smith after her 19-year-old son Daniel O’Hare took his own life, is currently based at Great Lumley Community Centre.

It works with families affected by suicide and aims to help prevent people from taking their own life.

Operations manager Sandra Emery said: “We do not charge for that support so we need to get money from elsewhere. The subject matter we deal with is sad and traumatic and people often skirt around it because it is difficult.

“Getting the message out there that we are here in a fun way is tremendous for us.

“They have come up with a really nice idea.”
