AROUND 250 children took part in an inaugural inter-school athletics event.

Pupils from 14 primary schools in the Chester-le-Street area took part in the event at the town’s Riverside Athletics Track.

Hosted by Durham and Chester-le-Street School Sport Partnership, the event was staged as part of an athletics programme under the 2012 Olympics legacy plan.

Workshops were held to teach Year Five and Six children sports leadership skills.

They then organised athletics trials at their own schools to select teams drawn from Years Three and Four who competed in events including long jump, print and mini hurdles.

Cllr Tracie Smith said: “Everyone was cheering the children on.

“It was great to see them all so involved and to see the friendly rivalry between the schools.

“This event really ticked all the boxes – with Cestria and the county council giving these children the opportunity to take part in a brilliant event and at the same time promoting the message about healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle.”
