PRIMARY school pupils staged their own version of the Lumiere Durham light spectacular tonight (Friday, January 15).

Hundreds of people flocked to Newker Primary School, Waldridge Road, Chester-le-Street, County Durham, for its fourth mini-Lumiere.

All 500 youngsters in the school created a series of illuminated artworks, featuring a range of materials.

This year’s event had the theme a Night at the Movies. Among the installations were Happy Feet made by year one pupils, featuring an igloo and penguins made out of milk bottles.

Year three pupils focused on the movie Up and made a house out of willow canes, with balloons lit by LED lights.

Other films depicted in light were Toy Story, Mulan, Finding Nemo and the Flintstones.

Teacher and organiser Gemma Hanson said: “This is the fourth year we are running this event. The installations are looking really good.

“The event was inspired by Lumiere Durham and started off as a way of livening up the dull period when children returned to school after the New Year.

"It’s gives them something to look forward to and has always been a great success.”

The event was in aid of Charlie Bear for Cancer Care, which is dedicated to raising funds for the Northern Centre for Cancer Care at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, and school funds.
