A GREYHOUND stadium will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a dog-themed beer festival.

Pelaw Grange Stadium, just outside Birtley, will be teaming up with Watermill Brewing Company; based in Cumbria, to mark the occasion with a three-day beer festival starting on Friday (July 24).

Stadium owner Jeff McKenna said: “Pelaw Grange is still the only greyhound stadium in the country to hold a beer festival.

“After the tremendous success of previous years we decided to run the Festival to celebrate our 50 years of trading.”

The Watermill Brewing Company doesn’t usually deliver its products to North East venues, but the stadium thought it would be an opportunity to showcase the brewery’s beers and celebrate its 50 years in racing.

Mr McKenna said: “It’s a great chance to sample something different to your usual and with greyhound racing on the Friday and Saturday evening, and on Sunday afternoon”.

There will also be live music on Sunday afternoon from 60s cover band FAB to bring the festival to a close.
