WHEN Joy Wanless returned to her old school last year during a visit to mark its centenary, she was so moved by the experience she penned a poem.

She was a pupil at Woodlea Primary School in the 1950s, when it was called Fencehouses Secondary School, and her poem recalls her fond memories and the emotions she felt on her return.

When it was given to headteacher Philip Adamson he was so moved he decided to make it the centrepiece of a new display.

He said: “The wording of the poem is so absolutely spot on about how we feel about the school. She has not been back for half a century and for the school to have raised such emotions for her is just wonderful.”

The display is surrounded by clay tiles featuring children's hand prints and is near the entrance used by the older children and gives the effect of hands waving goodbye as pupils leave school for the last time.

The tiles were made with help from Elaine Wright and the art department at Park View School, which is where the majority of Woodlea's pupils move to after completing their primary education.
