POLICE have revealed further information about an attempt to rob a taxi driver at knifepoint.

The incident took place as the taxi was travelling along the A1052 through Bournmoor, near Chester-le-Street, late last Thursday (January 15).

As it approached a roundabout near the Floaters Mill pub, a black Renault Clio braked in front of the white Ford Galaxy taxi.

The Clio driver got out of his vehicle and approached the Galaxy, brandishing a knife and demanding the cabbie hand over his money.

Concerned for his immediate safety, the taxi driver reversed his vehicle and pulled away.

But as he made off, the other man lashed out with his knife and damaged the Galaxy bonnet.

The taxi driver, who is in his early sixties and from West Rainton, near Durham, was shaken but unhurt.

Police said the would-be robber was of Asian appearance and was wearing a grey tracksuit top.

Witnesses to the incident, which took place at about 11.10pm, should call Durham Police, on 101, or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
