A CANCER charity is thanking volunteers who collected almost £700 for its work.

The collection in the centre of Chester-le-Street was held on Friday March 16 and raised £693 for Marie Cure Cancer Care.

The money will help the charity continue its work helping people in the region with terminal illnesses and their families.

A charity spokeswoman said: "We would like to thank everyone who turned out with a silly hat and a tray of daffodil pins to appeal to shoppers to contribute to the local work of the palliative care charity.

"Whether they were able to give an hour or a few days, by generously donating their own time and energy, the charity's volunteers were able to encourage more people to donate to the collections, supporting local patients and families.

"Our team of dedicated Marie Curie Nurses work across the region offering people end of life care in their own home, which is a key objective of Marie Curie Cancer Care - giving patients choice in where they spend their final days.

"All our services are offered to patients free of charge."
