THE extraordinary life of a legendary mountaineer will be explored next week.

Eric Shipton was one of the world’s great explorers, inspiring many modern climbers.

He took part in five expeditions to Mount Everest but was controversially sacked from the successful 1953 expedition at short notice, leaving his protege Edmund Hillary to become the first Westerner to scale the peak.

Mountaineer, writer and broadcaster Stephen Venables will tell Shipton’s life story in an illustrated talk at the Gala Theatre, in Durham City, on Thursday, March 22.

Mr Venables will read from Shipton’s books, tell stories and show photographs and film clips.

The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £13, for £12 for concessions. To book, visit galadurham.co.uk or call 0191-3324041.
