ROADWORKS are to start on a busy commuter route next week.

Resurfacing work on the A690 between West Rainton and Carrville, on the outskirts of Durham City, is to start on Monday, March 19 and last for around two weeks.

Drivers are being warned to expect some delays as parts of the road will be closed and other traffic management measures will be in place while the work is carried out.

Diversions and alternative routes will be signposted while at varying times revised speed limits of between 10mph and 50mph will be in force.

Dave Wilcox, Durham County Council’s strategic highways manager said: "We need to carry out these essential carriageway works on this stretch of the A690 and we will do our best to keep disruption to a minimum.

"We understand however that there will be some inconvenience and we would ask motorists and local residents for their patience while this work is carried out."
