A NEW play area costing £106,000 is to be created in the centre of Sacriston.

The facility will complement the recently-completed multi-use games area and outdoor gym next to The Fulforth Centre.

The scheme has won a £49,999 grant from Community Spaces, a Lottery fund managed by Groundwork UK It will include equipment and play experiences for children of all ages and abilities and was designed following consultation with residents.

Sacriston Community and Sports Trust is behind the project, which is also funded by Durham County Council, Sacriston Parish Council and developers.

"We are excited and proud to be funding part of this project. It will be a huge asset to the community," said parish council chairman Heather Liddle.

The play area has been designed by Groundwork North East’s landscape architect, Michele MacCallam.

"This project very much has the community at its centre. Local people will be involved in artwork, planting activities, planning future events and much more," said Linda Surtees, Chairman of Sacriston Community and Sports Trust.

Construction is due to begin in late April and be completed by mid-June.

An Olympic and Jubilee-themed opening event is planned for July 7.
