HOUSEHOLDERS are being advised to stay alert after a spate of thefts from gardens.

Solar lights, bird tables, wrought iron benches and hosepipes are just some of the items which have been stolen from homes in the Stanley area over the last couple of months.

Thefts have been reported in Stanley itself, as well as South Moor, Annfield Plain, Dipton and Burnopfield.

Detective Sergeant Paul Gray, of Stanley CID, said: "It’s highly likely that these items are being sold on, so any offers of cut-price garden ornaments or tools should be treated with suspicion.

"Some of the items may not be of high value individually, but people take pride in their gardens and want to enjoy them, especially at this time of year. These thieves are spoiling it for them."

Anyone who is offered such cut-price items or has information about those responsible for these thefts is asked to contact Durham Constabulary on 0845 60 60 60 365 and ask for Stanley CID or ring the Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
