DRIVERS are being warned to be on guard after a spate of thefts of fuel in recent days.

Thieves have struck in the Stanley area five times since Friday, draining fuel tanks of cars parked on the roadside overnight.

They have punctured the tanks and syphoned off the fuel, which has only been discovered by the owners the following morning when they try to drive off.

Three cases have been reported in the South Moor area and two in Annfield Plain.

Police suspect the thieves are targeting makes and models thought to have plastic, rather than metal fuel tanks. Of the five cases reported so far, two have been on Fiat Punto cars, two Renault Clios and one Vauxhall Corsa.

Detective Sergeant Paul Gray, of Stanley CID said; "We realise some owners will be limited in what extra precautions they can take, but obviously they should use a garage or a driveway if they have one.

"Residents can also help by being vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity they see or hear around parked cars."

Anyone with information on the recent thefts is asked to contact Stanley CID on 0191 375 2517.
