A NORTH-East soldier is to speedmarch the London Marathon for charity.

Jamie Peace, a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, will "tab" the 26.2 miles wearing army boots and carrying a rucksack weighing 20kg, with comrades Adam Bannister and Chris Underhill.

Spr Peace, from Durham City, began training for the marathon in September.

He said: "I haven’t done a marathon before but we’re always doing a lot of running.

"I’m feeling a bit more confident now we’ve had a bit more training."

The 20-year-old, who attended Framwellgate School Durham and New College Durham and worked at Sainsbury’s before joining the army in January 2009, hopes to complete the marathon, which is being held on Sunday, April 25, in six-and-a-half hours.

The trio hope to raise £6,000 for the Army Benevolent Fund, which helps serving and retired soldiers and their families.

Spr Peace is currently based at Brompton Barracks, in Chatham, Kent.
