A COUNCIL chairman has donated £500 to a heart scanner appeal.

Councillor Brian Myers, chairman of Durham County Council, has given the cash to the Heart of Durham Appeal from his charity fund.

The British Heart Foundation campaign aims to raise £47,923 to buy a 2D Echocardiogram for the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham City.

Councillor Myers said: "I am delighted to be able to make a donation to the appeal from money which we have raised specifically to promote the health and well being of people in the county.

"Early detection of the symptoms of heart disease is a major factor in the fight against coronary disease so I am particularly pleased to be able to make a £500 donation.

"I fully expect we will be able to hand over further donations in the future."

Fiona Turner, Heart of Durham Appeal manager, said the campaign had so far raised £9,500.
