THE final rooms of one of Durham’s historic hotels will be turned into student accommodation.

Durham County Council granted planning permission to convert the remaining hotel rooms at the Three Tuns, in New Elvet, for student use.

The rest of the 18th century building, which is grade II listed, is already used as student accommodation.

The proposal was backed by planners, who said it would bring a heritage asset back into sustainable active use and secure needed internal refurbishment.

All the work to be carried out will be internal and on the first and second floors to create studio flats with kitchen fittings and en-suite bathrooms.

In total, 15 rooms are being refurbished, along with three offices and the drawing room.

The Three Tuns closed in 2013.
