A SERIAL burglar committed his latest break-in to get back behind bars, amid fears he may be becoming institutionalised, a court heard.
Appearing via video link from nearby Durham Prison, 30-year-old Gavin Cummings pleaded guilty to the latest offence, during a short hearing at the city’s crown court.
He admitted breaking into the house in Plantation View, West Pelton, taking two phones, perfume and clothing, on December 28.
Defending barrister, Tony Davis, told the court: “He’s outlined he committed the offence to go back to prison because he feels he’s become institutionalised and struggling in the outside environment.”
Judge Christopher Prince adjourned sentencing Cummings, of East Street, Grange Villa, until January 27 to clear up other matters which may, or may not be taken into consideration.
