MORE than 200 children sang alongside young choristers in the hallowed surrounds of Durham Cathedral today (Wednesday, November 25).
The concert was the culmination of a term’s training on the Cathedral’s Music Outreach Programme, involving eight Sunderland primary schools.
Guests included the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Sunderland, Councillor Alan Emerson and Janice Emerson, and parents, relatives and friends of the young singers.
Councillor Pat Smith, Sunderland City Council’s portfolio holder for children’s services, said: “The Outreach Programme is a great opportunity for our primary school to develop their musical talents still further and to perform in front of family and friends at Durham Cathedral which is always a great occasion.
“The Outreach Programme has provided hundreds of primary schoolchildren with this fantastic experience over the years.
“This concert is the result of months of hard work by the children, their teachers and their schools.”
The programme included Edelweiss by Rodgers and Hammerstein, the Lambton Worm and Nativity Carol by John Rutter.
