DOG owners still have time to register for a sponsored walk for Durham’s St Cuthbert’s Hospice.

The annual Paws for a Cause walk is on Sunday, October 13 in Houghall Woods on the outskirts of the city.

Owners and their pets will walk 1.3 and three-mile routes to raise money for the hospice.

Margaret Elliott , 26, of Sacriston, and her two dogs, Bailey and Pierre, are taking part for the third time in memory of her grandfather Ian Clarke, who died aged 76 in St Cuthbert’s in 2011.

Ms Elliott said: “My Granda spent his last two weeks at St Cuthbert’s Hospice, and they really made a massive difference.

“The care and attention the staff gave not only to my Granda, but the rest of the family, was second to none.

“One day he decided he fancied a little brandy, and somebody immediately went and got him one – nothing was too much trouble. I’m so grateful my Granda was able to die in a peaceful environment surrounded by the people he loved.”

People can register online at www.stcuthbertshospice.com or by calling Poppy Jones on 0191-3861170. Registration costs £10 per dog and all walkers will receive a goody bag, rosettes and doggy treats on the day.

The hospice needs to raise £1.2m a year to provide free care for people with life-limiting illnesses.
