Concert plan for retiring teacher

POPULAR teacher John Frankland is retiring at the end of the academic year, after 23 years as head of the music department at Hummersknott Academy. Former students are planning to stage a concert for him on Saturday, July 7, at the school. Organisers are keen to hear from former pupils that might be interested in taking part. JUMBLE SALE: A jumble sale will be held in the Clifton Centre, in Clifton Avenue, Darlington, on Friday, at 6.30pm. Admission costs 20p. Proceeds to St Columba’s Church funds.

MAYORAL PLANS: Darlington mayor Paul Baldwin will attend an event at Durham Cathedral tomorrow morning, marking the installation of Sir Thomas Allen as chancellor of Durham University, along with the mayoress, Kim Baldwin. The pair will then attend a drinks reception and performance of the musical West Side Story, in the Liddiard Theatre, at Polam Hall School, in Grange Road, Darlington, on Friday evening.

DADS’ GROUP: The first meeting of an independent support group for fathers who have been denied contact with their children following separation or divorce was held at St Herbert's Church Hall, in Darlington, on Saturday morning. For information about future meetings, call 07582-638075.

SCOUTS REUNION: Former members of Heighington Scouts are invited to a reunion, in Heighington Village Hall, on Saturday, July 14, from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, celebrating 40 years of scouting in the village.
