Drewe Broughton says the offer to return to senior football with Darlington was one he could not refuse and he expects the survival fight will last until the end of the season.

Quakers are four points adrift of fifth-bottom Lincoln City ahead of tomorrow's home game with mid-table Ebbsfleet United.

They are aiming to continue the form shown in Tuesday's game with Luton, a 1-1 draw that saw Darlington put in an encouraging performance with Broughton showing his worth as a forward able to hold the ball up in the final third.

The 33-year-old has been parachuted into Quakers' relegation fight, playing the last two games after answering Craig Liddle's SOS.

"I had a look at it [the offer from Darlington] and I'd missed the pressure, I'd missed playing in games when there's been something on it. There's certainly something on the games here," said Broughton, who was has had over 20 clubs in his career and was with Lincoln last season.

"I'd pretty much knocked it on the head and I've been coaching the under-15s at Luton and helping out with a few of the other age groups at the academy and just playing locally for Arlesey Town.

"My mate's the manager and I know a few players there so I've been playing there to keep fit, to keep my eye in.

"I don't even know if Lidds knew where I was playing, he was just thinking he needed somebody like me. He found my number - you know what football's like, he'll have got my number off someone - and he gave me a couple of days to think about it.

"I'd travelled my whole career and made a decision last summer to knock it on the head and to start building another career which I am doing.

"I'm really enjoying it. I had a look at things last summer and thought do I want to go here, there and everywhere again. I've done it too long.

"But the offer from Lidds appealed to me and I'm glad to be here."

Darlington are winless in 11 games with ten matches to play, and Broughton said: "What we've got here is an honest bunch of lads and while you've got that you've got a chance. It will go down to the wire as well, it really will.

"I've been involved in a few relegation scrapes - I was with Wrexham when they went down, but I've come through them too.

"I was at Southend a few years ago when they stayed up so I know what it's all about. You've just got to keep working hard, there's no easy fix."
