ADVICE has been given to some of Darlington’s most vulnerable residents on how to avoid falling victim to doorstep scams.

Trading Standards Officers visited The Deaf Club, whose members meet in Eldon Street, Darlington, as part of a continued drive to inform local residents about the dangers of scams and rogue traders.

Officers believe the difficult economic climate is being exploited by rogue traders to make money from people who mistakenly see scams as the chance to make some much-needed cash or who are conned by sharp practices.

During their visit, Trading Standards offered tips on how to avoid being scammed, how to recognise common doorstep sales tactics, dealing with high pressure selling techniques, and cancellation rights.

A spokesperson for Trading Standards said: “I would urge residents to stop, think and think again when faced with an offer which sounds too good to be true.

“Residents’ first line of defence to a doorstep caller is their front door – never unlock your door to someone who you do not know. If you do lose money to a scammer or a rogue trader, always report it.”
