PUPILS have illustrated the beauty of science with their own colourful creations.

Darlington Education Village held a Science Illustrator of the Year Competition by challenging pupils to demonstrate difficult scientific concepts through artwork.

The creations needed to be hand made and reflect the complexity of science.

Year 11 winner Daniel Hayman said: "I was listening in class to the collision theory and started drawing; before I knew it I had the basis for my competition piece.

"I like drawing so when this competition came along I thought I would give it a go and I'm really glad that I did."

Daniel's winning piece was a full-colour cartoon, demonstrating the meaning of the collision theory.

Tutor Dr Richard Willis said: "We really wanted to raise the profile of science in the school and this is one way in which we thought we could."

Also claiming first prize was a Year 9 winner Louise Turner who showed off her skills in an illustration of the human skeleton.

The winners were each given a £50 gift voucher to spend in The Art Shop in Bondgate, Darlington.
