A HOTEL is cementing its long relationship with its neighbouring cricket club.

Rockliffe Hall hotel, spa and golf resort will sponsor its Hurworth neighbours, Rockliffe Park Cricket Club.

The relationship between the two began in 1918 when cricket fan Lord Southampton bought the Rockliffe estate and created a pitch for his workers to play against the local club.

The two sides eventually merged to form Rockliffe Park Cricket Club and the club has continued to play on the estate since.

Now, the Darlington and District Cricket League members, who have just started the new season, will carry the name of the five-star resort on their whites.

Nick Holmes, hotel managing director, said: "The two organisations have enjoyed close links down the years.

"The club has allowed us to use their grounds for specialist activities, such as laser pigeon shooting and other corporate event activities."

Club chairman Richard Howell said: "It's been very well received by all of the club to have this support from Rockliffe Hall."
