THE operators of a retirement complex have joined forces with building firm Clarion Homes in a £6m deal to develop and sell retirement apartments in its grounds.

Jeremy Walford, managing director of Middleton Hall, in Middleton St George, near Darlington, said the hall was originally going to develop the apartments alone.

He said: "The joint venture creates a terrific combination, based on each company's strengths and experience, giving prospective purchasers the benefits of a home built by Clarion and resident services provided by Middleton Hall."

The deal will see 26 one and two-bedroom apartments being built in the 20-acre grounds.

Residents will be able to live independently or to make use of the hall's services - from housekeeping and maintenance to meals in the restaurant and transport to the shops. Emergency assistance will also be accessible 24-hours a day.

Ron Starkie, of Yarm-based Clarion Homes said: "With the expertise in care offered by Middleton Hall, together with its stunning location, we will be able to create a development that will be entirely unique in the area."

The first six apartments will be ready for occupation by Christmas. Summer open days will enable people to find out more.
