ONE of the main routes through Darlington was closed last night after a major gas leak.

Yarm Road was shut to traffic from around 8pm after the incident was discovered. The leak occurred near the junction of Yarm Road and Neasham Road.

Police, fire, council and gas board officials were called to the scene and worked through the night to resolve the problem.

Speaking around midnight, a spokeswoman for Darlington Borough Council said: "The emergency services have set up a traffic exclusion zone to ensure the continued safety of motorists, pedestrians and residents whilst the leak is being investigated by the gas utility company.

"Road closures are in place on Yarm Road from the junction with Hundens Lane to Parkgate."

The main entrance to the town's railway station was closed, though services were unaffected.

The council spokeswoman asked motorists to respect the traffic exclusion zone area and follow any diversion signs. Drivers are urged to use alternative routes.

Consideration was given to evacuating nearby homes, with the civil contingency plans drawn up, but in the end such action was not required.

"All services are working together to minimise the impact on local residents," said the council spokeswoman.

"In the meantime, please would residents remain clear of the area to allow the services on site to deal with the leak as quickly as possible."

Insp John Zissler, of Darlington police, said the emergency services had worked well.

"At the moment we have in place a sterile area. The fire service is on the scene and the gas company has turned out and are calling out some emergency teams," he said.

"We are advising people to stay in their houses with their windows shut."
