PRESIDENT Donald Trump’s recent visit to Britain sparked anger from a number of Darlington residents who took to the streets in protest last week.

Large protests were staged up and down the country in response to the controversial politician's brief trip to the UK, which saw him meet with parties including the Queen and Prime Minister Theresa May.

In Darlington, anti-bigotry group White Rose Darlington erected a symbolic ‘wall’ in the town centre on Friday, July 13 and erected a board featuring quotes from President Trump on women..

They encouraged members of the public to express their views and gathered their 'Dear Donald...' comments, which will soon be delivered to the US Embassy in London

Speakers at the protest included Councillor Cyndi Hughes, Green Party coordinator Matthew Snedker, and Peter Greenwood, chairman of White Rose Darlington.

Mr Greenwood said: “Our town joined in and demonstrated that most residents wanted to join those who were telling Mr Trump, US voters and our own government that they oppose his cruelty and inhumanity.

“His opponents are asked why we have no respect for the presidency.

"The answer is that most of us respect the presidency so much that we are appalled and disgusted by the way Mr Trump is dragging the reputation of that office through the mud.

“Instead of being a role model who demonstrates to the young how decent Americans should behave, he does the polar opposite and has become a hero to racists, homophobes, misanthropists, callous greed mongers and bullies everywhere.”

Mr Greenwood added that they found the support from passers-by very encouraging and said several people came into the town centre just to take part.

Meanwhile, Darlington resident Martin Roberts, 68, travelled to London to join the protests taking place in the capital, where pro-Trump rallies were also held.

He said: “I did it because I was fed up of ranting in front of the TV.”

Mr Roberts hasn’t attended any protests in recent years but decided to take the train down to London to make a statement. I’m glad I did it. The world is going slightly crazy, what else can you do?”
