THOUSANDS of families gathered together to enjoy a day in the sun as part of an summer community celebration.

Entertainers and performers of all ages joined in to take part in Darlington’s Elim Pentecostal Church Summer Community Fun Day, held in the town’s North Park over the weekend.

A range of activities, including archery, football, sumo suit wrestling and face painting were on offer during the day, with Darlington Police visiting the event to offer safety advice to guests and show youngsters around a force van.

The Salvation Army band and several dance groups performed live, with Darlington Mayor Veronica Copeland also enjoying the event.

Speaking on behalf of the church, Adele Barnett, said: “We had approximately 3,000 people attend and the atmosphere around the park was lovely.

“It was great to see so many people enjoying the wide variety of activities on offer.

“It was a very hot afternoon so all the dancers and performers did exceptionally well to entertain the crowds.”

Darlington firms, organisations and community members were also thanked for dedicating their free time to the event.
