Victoria Cross

ON Monday morning there will be a raise the flag ceremony and the unveiling of a special Commemorative Victoria Cross (VC) Stone for Lt Commander George Bradford, one of the ‘fighting Bradford’ brothers who was killed during the First World War in April 1918, followed by a wreath-laying by Darlington Mayor Veronica Copeland. The event starts at 10am in the Market Square as part of Armed Forces Day celebrations across the town.

Church event

NORTHGATE United Reformed Church in Darlington is having a celebration weekend of the opening of their new Church Sanctuary. The event will take place on On Saturday, June 30 between 10am to 4pm, and on Sunday, July 1 between 2pm and 4pm. All are welcome. On Saturday evening, the Sundial Singers are also giving a special concert at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £8.

Scarecrow fun

A FARM is offering free straw for a village’s forthcoming scarecrow festival. From Monday, there will be straw available from the farm on Strait Lane for people to come and help themselves to, between 8am-7pm, for the Hurworth Scarecrow Festival. The event takes place on Saturday, July 7.

Gardening club

DARLINGTON Amateur Gardening Club are meeting at Bondgate Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 4 to give members another chance to showcase their skills in the latest summer show. For more information, call 01325-465875.
