A SPECIAL ceremony celebrating six Darlington residents officially becoming British citizens has given schoolchildren an insight into citizenship at work.
Year 5 pupils from Corporation Road Primary School witnessed the ceremony where people originally from Cameroon, India, Nigeria, Spain, Turkey and Jordan gained British citizenship.
The children sang the national anthem and gave a presentation on Darlington's history, including the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage.
The ceremony was also attended by Darlington Mayor Jan Taylor, High Sherriff of Durham Caroline Peacock and Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Durham Sheena Davis.
Councillor Cyndi Hughes said: “It was lovely for the children to take part in the citizenship ceremony. They did so well and everyone enjoyed listening to what they had to say.
"I am sure it made the ceremony even more special for everyone involved.”
