AN 11-YEAR-OLD boy has become the first pupil at a Darlington school to pick up a memorial art award.

Sons of Joseph Lamb, a former teacher at Dodmire Junior School, gave money to the school after their father died last year.

Mr Lamb had taught at the school from 1967 to 1988.

When he died, his sons, all of whom attended the school, donated money to pay for an art award.

This week, 11-year-old Josh Ward was presented with a book and certificate as the first winner of the art award.

Some of the money has also been put towards a greenhouse and allotments for the school.

Children have been growing a variety of vegetables in their lessons, including tomatoes and cucumbers.

They have sold the goods to teachers and the profits have been put back into the greenhouse work.

Headteacher Bob Mellard said of Mr Lamb: "He was an active gardener and included it in his teaching."
