A HEADTEACHER who has seen the size of his school double in his 23 years at the top has retired.

Tom Lumley left High Coniscliffe Primary School, near Darlington, yesterday to start a new life with his family on a Scottish island.

Mr Lumley has overseen great changes during his time at the school, which is now one of the leading academic performers in the area.

He also said a number of new buildings had helped to double the size of the school, including modern computer facilities.

He said: "After being headteacher for 23 years, it is with some great regret I am leaving.

"I will take with me many fond memories.

"I want to express my thanks to everyone associated with the school for making my time a good one."

Mr Lumley will retire to the Isle of Skye, in the Inner Hebrides, in Scotland, with his family.

He has bought some land on the island and plans to develop it at a future date.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Lumley's contribution to school and village life, and his achievements were also recognised at the school's summer fair earlier this month.

Laura Tweddle, chairwoman of governors, said: "We have been very fortunate over the last 23 years to have been led by a very dedicated individual, always pursuing the very best possible education in a caring environment for the children of High Coniscliffe Primary School.

"This is evident in the superb facilities we have here and the results achieved each year by our pupils."
