DARLINGTON has been selected to lead a nationwide search for 200 "pioneering members of the community".
The Member Pioneer scheme will run from the town's Co-op supermarkets to build relationships with charity and resident groups, encouraging them to discuss matters close to their hearts.
Pioneers will also unite with "good causes" associated with the Co-op’s membership scheme to provide additional funding.
Rufus Olins, group director community and campaigns at the Co-op, said: “We recognise how important it is to support our communities practically, and encouraging people to come together and develop deeper relationships with our colleagues, members and local causes is what co-operation is about.
"The Member Pioneers in Darlington will bring this to life in the communities where they live.”
