STORIES from four decades of active Army service as the “head of the family” for the Royal Dragoon Guards based in Catterick Garrison have been re-told to Rotarians.

Colonel-in-Chief Nick Millen followed in his father’s footsteps to join the regiment leading to an illustrious career spanning 40 years and being recognised with an OBE in 2013.

Darlington Rotary Club members welcomed Col Millen to talk about his life’s work as part of a meeting on Friday, January 20.

He told members about his current five-year appointment as Colonel-in-Chief for the Catterick-based Dragoons following his recent retirement from active service to become one of the region’s most senior soldiers.

A Rotary spokeswoman said: “Nick described his duties as having two main functions – one is as ‘head of the family’ and the second is to be the official representative of the regiment in a wider Army context.

“He chairs the Regimental Council, works with the many groups affiliated to the Royal Dragoons and attends training courses as well as ceremonial events.

“He attends an enormous number of briefings and meetings and particularly enjoys his visits to Sandhurst where he helps to select the future officers of the Royal Dragoons.”
