AN award-winning design student has donated her prize to a cancer charity.

Maisie Humphries, 16, passed her £50 winnings to Cancer Research UK.

The Darlington College student won the prize in the annual design competition for the Mayor of Darlington’s annual ball.

Miss Humphries’ winning “cops and robbers” themed design will be used on posters, tickets and table menus for ball, which is to be staged next April to raise funds for St Teresa’s Hospice, the Samaritans, the 700 Club and Breathe Easy.

Miss Humphries said: “Cancer seems to affect everyone – I don’t know anyone who does not know someone who has developed it.

The winning student was selected by Darlington’s Mayor Brian Jones, Mayoress Doris Jones and Rob Maxey from ball sponsor Ernest Bennett.

Mayor of Darlington Brian Jones said: “Maisie’s act of generosity is commendable and shows how aware many young people are of the world about them.

“Her designs were fantastic and the donation of the prize really does warm my heart and makes me even more thankful that we have Darlington College in our town.”
