A FORMER staff sergeant has celebrated her 100th birthday.
Vi Johnson marked her centenary year surrounded by her family, friends and carers in her Darlington home after hosting an open-house celebration.
Ms Johnson, who grew up in County Durham, was part of the Auxiliary Territorial Service for four years after joining as a recruit and being appointed as a staff sergeant during the Second World War.
She is also well known for her sporting prowess, having been a keen golf player and captain of her club until the age of 90.
Diane Chandler, owner of Home Instead Senior Care Darlington, celebrated with Ms Johnson and her family.
She said: “It was so humbling spending time with Vi.
“She is a gracious lady who is very grateful for her long life."
Ms Johnson’s carer, Margaret Clarkson, added: “Vi is an inspiration as she is very independent and has a wonderful outlook on life.
“It was so special to be able to celebrate with her on her big day.”
