DARLINGTON’S MP has backed a drive to encourage more people to get their blood pressure checked.
Jenny Chapman had her blood pressure taken at the Denmark Street Pharmacy on Friday, September 18 as part of Know Your Numbers week.
The campaign was launched to urge people to undergo checks after figures revealed 38.8 per cent of those in County Durham could have undiagnosed hypertension, or high blood pressure.
The condition, known as a silent killer, is the biggest risk factor for stroke and heart attacks and can cause disability and dementia.
As part of the campaign Denmark Street Pharmacy offered free blood pressure checks throughout the week in association with Blood Pressure UK.
Katharine Jenner, CEO of Blood Pressure UK, said: “After you have had your blood pressure checked, you can make changes to reduce your risk, such as eating less salt, taking more exercise and drinking less alcohol – it’s never too late.”
